Smaller dog breeds are much preferred by a lot of people.
This is part of what makes them so great with children. In some cases this freedom for your dog is not at all practical due to your local environment so it would not be fair on the dog to have him in a continuously restricted environment when he obviously needs some high-powered exercise.
